Totality was not complete on the island of Tahiti and we could not observe the Baily's beads or the corona, but a few atolls in the Tuamotus archipelago had up to 4 minutes 100 % totality.

Jennifer Capriati family spokesperson denies suicide allegation

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Former South Florida tennis prodigy Jennifer Capriati went from being the poster child for burnout at 17 to a cinematic-type rise to No. 1 in her sport at 25. But this week she finds herself back in the news for a medical emergency.

The 34-year-old, three-time Grand Slam champion was taken from her Singer Island, Fla., condo to a hospital early Sunday morning for what a family spokesperson is describing as "an accidental overdose of medication prescribed to Jen by her personal physician."

Spokesperson Lacey Wickline has called published reports that have categorized the incident as a suicide attempt as "completely inaccurate" and that Capriati is "recovering fully and speedily."

Capriati, who grew up in Lauderhill and made her pro debut three weeks before her 14th birthday at the Polo Club in Boca Raton, Fla., told the (New York) Daily News in a 2007 interview that she was dealing with suicidal impulses after multiple shoulder and wrist surgeries had kept her off the circuit since November 2004, when she was still ranked 10th.

"It’s like you’re being taken over by a demon. You just feel there’s no way out of this space you’re in. It feels like the end of the world," she said in the interview. "When you are just so exhausted and tired of feeling that way, you (think), ’I want to be off this planet right now.’ "

"Jen will be OK. God is good," Capriati’s mother, Denise, texted this week to Justin Gimelstob, a former ATP Tour player and family friend.

"She’s in a tough way, physically and mentally. Depression is an illness," Gimelstob said from Wimbledon, where he is an analyst for Tennis Channel.

"She would say, ’At least when I play tennis I have something to do; I have structure. But without tennis who am I?’

"That’s sad because she’s an amazing woman and needs to believe that."

After winning five titles and an Olympic gold medal before turning 17, Capriati was arrested in 1993 for shoplifting and again in 1994 in Coral Gables, Fla., for marijuana possession.

Following a 15-month layoff, including a stint in a Miami drug rehabilitation facility, Capriati began a series of comebacks until reaching No. 1 in Oct. 2001, the same year she won two of her three majors.

Gimelstob is certain that Capriati, who has earned more than $10 million in prize money, has another comeback in her.

"She has tremendous character and is a fighter," he said. "She’s fought through adversity before. It’s just a matter of her doing it again."

I took this on Moorea in French Polynesia after makng it back to the shoreline. I had been hiking all day and got kind of lost on some trails in the forest of the island, I ended up finding my way out on some forest or logging road as it was getting dark. Walking back to the accomodations I was exhasted and some Tahitian dude offered to drive me back. In the car he offered to sell me some pot. Apparently, the reason Americans go there is for the pot. In any case it was nice of him to give me a ride. A long but memorable day.

The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake was an undersea earthquake that occurred at 00:58:53 UTC (07:58:53 local time) December 26, 2004, with an epicentre off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The earthquake triggered a series of devastating tsunamis along the coasts of most landmasses bordering the Indian Ocean, killing more than 225,000 people in eleven countries, and inundating coastal communities with waves up to 30 meters (100 feet). This was the ninth-deadliest natural disaster in modern history. Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, and Myanmar were hardest hit.
With a magnitude of between 9.1 and 9.3, it is the second largest earthquake ever recorded on a seismograph. This earthquake had the longest duration of faulting ever observed, between 8.3 and 10 minutes. It caused the entire planet to vibrate as much as 1 cm (0.5 inches)[1] and triggered other earthquakes as far away as Alaska.[2]
The disaster is known by the scientific community as the Great Sumatra-Andaman earthquake,[3] and is also known as the Asian Tsunami and the Boxing Day Tsunami. The tsunami occurred exactly one year after the 2003 Bam earthquake and exactly two years before the 2006 Hengchun earthquake.
The plight of the many affected people and countries prompted a widespread humanitarian response. In all, the worldwide community donated more than $7 billion (2004 U.S. dollars) in humanitarian aid.

Earthquake characteristics

The earthquake was initially reported as moment magnitude 9.0. In February 2005 scientists revised the estimate of the magnitude to 9.3.[4] Although the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has accepted these new numbers, the United States Geological Survey has so far not changed its estimate of 9.1. The most recent studies in 2006 have obtained a magnitude of Mw 9.1 to 9.3. Dr. Hiroo Kanamori of the California Institute of Technology believes that Mw = 9.2 is a good representative value for the size of this great earthquake.[5]
The hypocentre of the main earthquake was at 3.316° N 95.854° ECoordinates: 3.316° N 95.854° E, approximately 160 km (100 mi), in the Indian Ocean just north of Simeulue island, off the western coast of northern Sumatra, at a depth of 30 km (19 mi) below mean sea level (initially reported as 10 km). The earthquake itself (apart from the tsunami) was felt as far away as Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, Singapore and the Maldives.
Indonesia lies between the Pacific Ring of Fire along the north-eastern islands adjacent to and including New Guinea and the Alpide belt along the south and west from Sumatra, Java, Bali, Flores, and Timor.
Great earthquakes such as the Sumatra-Andaman event, which are invariably associated with megathrust events in subduction zones, have seismic moments that can account for a significant fraction of the global earthquake moment across century-scale time periods. The Sumatra-Andaman earthquake was the largest earthquake since 1964, and the second largest since the Kamchatka earthquake of October 16, 1737.

Of all the seismic moment released by earthquakes in the 100 years from 1906 through 2005, roughly one-eighth was due to the Sumatra-Andaman event. This quake, together with the Good Friday Earthquake (Alaska, 1964) and the Great Chilean Earthquake (1960), account for almost half of the total moment. The much smaller but still catastrophic 1906 San Francisco earthquake is included in the diagram at right for perspective. Mw denotes the magnitude of an earthquake on the moment magnitude scale.
Since 1900 the only earthquakes recorded with a greater magnitude were the 1960 Great Chilean Earthquake (magnitude 9.5) and the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake in Prince William Sound (9.2). The only other recorded earthquake of magnitude 9.0 or greater was off Kamchatka, Russia, on November 4, 1952 (magnitude 9.0).[6] Each of these megathrust earthquakes also spawned tsunamis in the Pacific Ocean, but the death toll from these was significantly lower. The worst of these caused only a few thousand deaths, primarily because of the lower population density along the coasts near affected areas and the much greater distances to more populated coasts.
Other very large megathrust earthquakes occurred in 1868 (Peru, Nazca Plate and South American Plate); 1827 (Colombia, Nazca Plate and South American Plate); 1812 (Venezuela, Caribbean Plate and South American Plate) and 1700 (Cascadia Earthquake, western U.S. and Canada, Juan de Fuca Plate and North American Plate). These are all believed to have been of greater than magnitude 9, but no accurate measurements were available at the time.

Luther Vandross dead at 54.

Legendary R&B artist Luther Vandross, whose smooth, silky voice gave soul to songs about life, love and relationships, died Friday. He was 54 years old.
The popular crooner suffered a debilitating stroke in April 2003. Even so, his album "Dance With My Father," co-written with Richard Marx, sold nearly a million copies in its first month of release that June. The following year, that album won three Grammy Awards, including song of the year.
His eighth and final Grammy came for best R&B performance by a duo -- the remake of "The Closer I Get to You," sung with Beyonce Knowles.
Vandross died at JFK Medical Center in Edison, New Jersey at 1:47 p.m. ET, surrounded by family, friends and a medical support team, a statement from the hospital said.
Alluding to the stroke, "which he never fully recovered from," hospital spokesman Rob Cavanaugh said, "Throughout his illness, Luther received excellent medical care and attention from his medical team. Luther was deeply touched by all the thoughts and wishes from his fans."
Vandross' songs and emotionally charged ballads carry a signature sound. During his four-decade career, Vandross sold more than 25 million copies, each one of his 14 albums achieving either platinum or multi-platinum status.
Luther Ronzoni Vandross was born into a New York City family steeped in the traditions of gospel and soul. He began his career writing and performing jingles for television commercials. He even appeared on "Sesame Street" in October 1969.
It was after a chance meeting with David Bowie at a recording studio in 1975 that Vandross was asked to sing backup on Bowie's hit album, "Young Americans."
Later, Vandross served as Bowie's opening act. Vandross also sang backup for Bette Midler and Barbra Streisand.
When record companies rejected him, Vandross used his own money to produce his 1981 debut album, "Never Too Much."
It went on to top the R&B charts and sold 2 million copies.
By the end of the 1980s Vandross had nearly two dozen smash singles, including "Give Me the Reason," "Stop to Love" and "There's Nothing Better Than Love," made with Gregory Hines. Arguably his most memorable hit was the 1989 classic, "Here and Now," which has become a wedding staple.
The momentum carried into the 1990s, with Vandross recording "The Best Things In Life Are Free," a pop duet with Janet Jackson that hit the Top 10 and No. 1 on the R&B charts.
He followed that in 1994 with "Endless Love," a duet with Mariah Carey that reached No. 2 on the pop charts.
"I was Luther from day one, from the day I began, and I think that's a very important thing," he once said. "I think that's what sustained my career for so long is that when I start, you know it's me."
Vandross struggled with health and image problems, claiming that he lost 100 pounds -- 13 times. He suffered from hypertension and diabetes, which killed two siblings and his father, but refused to slow down until his stroke two years ago.
Of "Dance With My Father," he once said that title song "was very emotional for me and, yes, it is based on my own experience.
"It's not just about losing one's father, but about missing someone who is gone -- for whatever reason -- and the longing you feel for that moment in the past when you were together," he said.

This is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. A steep one hour climb over sharp lime stone and thorny vegetation was worth it to see this view of the the western bay of Wayag. Oh alright, I lied when I said I wouldn't post any more pictures of scad. You have to admit it looks kind of weird when the whole sky turns to fish...

This is Bari Reef in Bonaire. The government of the country made all the waters around the island a marine reserve, but then they also allow fishing! So shortly after this picture was taken fishermen came and now the fish are all gone. The fish shoaling like this is a seasonal phenomenon, but they took a lot of fish too.

The Taj Mahal (Hindi: ताज महल, Urdu: تاج محل) is a mausoleum located in Agra, India. The Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan commissioned it as a mausoleum for his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Construction began in 1632 and was completed in approximately 1648. Very often when I show this photo to other people, they ask "is that snow there in the background?" Yes, here we have snow on Etna while it is erupting - the lava in the foreground is more than 1000 degrees Celsius, about 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. The figures in the middle ground give some sort of scale, although this image contains a vast range of scales. In the background the Bay of Catania can be seen, which is more than 15 km in north-south extension. The lava flow is from an eruption that occurred next to the Southeast Crater at Etna's summit, lasting from 4 February until 14 November 1999 and offering a unique opportunity for tens of thousands of tourists to see live lava close up.

The main types of bridges are arches, beam bridges, cable-stayed bridges, cantilever bridges and suspension bridges. You will have noticed that this list does not include truss bridges. These are usually arches, beams or girders, or cantilevers, or they may be parts of bridges, for example the suspended span of a cantilever bridge, or the deck of a cable-stayed bridge or a suspension bridge. The phrase "truss bridge", however, is sometimes reserved for those which act primarily as beams, while the others are discussed under the heading of the bridges of which they form a part. You could say that a truss, like a box-girder or a pre-stressed span, is more a type of construction than a type of structure.

History of bridges
The first bridges were spans made of wooden logs or planks and eventually stones, using a simple support and crossbeam arrangement. Most of these early bridges were very poorly built and could rarely support heavy weights. It was this inadequacy which led to the development of better bridges. The arch was first used by the Roman Empire for bridges and aqueducts, some of which still stand today. These arch based bridges could stand in conditions that would previously have swept any bridge away.

An example is the Alcantara Bridge, built over the river Tagus, near Portugal. Most earlier bridges would have been swept away by the strong current. The Romans also used cement, which reduced the variation of strength found in natural stone. One type of cement, called pozzolana, consisted of water, lime, sand, and volcanic rock. Brick and mortar bridges were built after the Roman era, as the technology for cement was lost then later rediscovered.
Although large Chinese bridges existed in wooden construction since the ancient Warring States, the oldest surviving stone bridge in China is the Zhaozhou Bridge, built from 595 to 605 AD during the Sui Dynasty. This bridge also holds a great amount of significance in the global history of bridge-building, as it is the world's oldest open-spandrel stone segmental arch bridge. Although Europe's oldest fully stone segmental arch bridge is the Ponte Vecchio (1345 AD) of Florence, the enormous Roman era Trajan's Bridge (105 AD) featured open-spandrel segmental arches in wooden construction.
Rope bridges, a simple type of suspension bridge, were used by the Inca civilization in the Andes mountains of South America, just prior to European colonization in the 1500s.
During the 18th century there were many innovations in the design of timber bridges by Hans Ulrich, Johannes Grubenmann, and others. The first engineering book on building bridges was written by Hubert Gautier in 1716.

The Solomon Islands is a nation in Melanesia, east of Papua New Guinea, consisting of nearly one thousand islands. Together they cover a land mass of 28,400 square kilometres (10,965 sq mi). The capital is Honiara, located on the island of Guadalcanal.
The Solomon Islands are believed to have been inhabited by Melanesian people for thousands of years. The United Kingdom established a protectorate over the Solomon Islands in the 1890s. Some of the most bitter fighting of World War II occurred in the Solomon Islands campaign of 1942-45, including the Battle of Guadalcanal. Self-government was achieved in 1976 and independence two years later. The country remains a Commonwealth Realm.
Since 1998 ethnic violence, government misconduct and crime have undermined stability and civil society. In June 2003 an Australian-led multinational force, the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI), arrived to restore peace and disarm ethnic militias.
The North Solomon Islands are divided between the independent Solomon Islands and Bougainville Province in Papua New Guinea.

She was ousted in the first round of the 2003 Australian Open, and has since been hampered by back and shoulder injuries.
Even after two years out of tennis with a shoulder injury, Jennifer Capriati has not given up hope of a comeback at age 30.
The former world number 1, and one of the earliest teenaged child prodigies of a generation ago, is keen to make a return of sorts.

'These days, if I'm not travelling to go see a doctor I'm just hanging out, trying to have some fun. I'm still in Florida, I still work out, I'm still trying to come back,' she said in comments on the Women's Tennis Association's website.

Capriati lifted the Australian Open title in 2000 and 2001 and also took the French Open title in 2001.
